Social Media & My Career

Social media is now an important part of any medium. In my field of Film it is especially important. Social media is what is used to communicate to the masses, to advertise, to criticize and to display. It is also used as a way for other like-minded creative professionals and potential employers to connect and hopefully invite you to to join a project. This is where your reputation on social media becomes absolutely paramount. How other people view you as a character will heavily influence the look they have towards your work and how they would feel about working with you. We all want to work with others who we feel we would get along and enjoy our time with. If your social media does not reflect you as a likeable or a professional individual the likelihood of growing connections and work is limited. And as the saying goes, "it's not what you know, it's who you know."

To keep a professional reputation I would not want any of my personal social media available to the public, such as my Facebook profile. Rather I would send traffic towards my Linkedin page or my website which is a much more professional setting. If people would like to see more personality and my actual human side I would use a platform such as twitter.

In a previous assessment I built up my own Linkedin page. I will use this page to connect with other students, lecturers and any other creative experts I have met or even who I haven't met. So that I may get recognised or to just simply start making connections. For me I feel that Linkedin is a very specialised platform, one which is used purely as an online CV. It will be a place for others to have a look through and get an idea of my skills set and of how I work. This page will also be a gateway into or out of my website, which holds my previous work and links to other social media that I am on.
However I would not use Linkedin as a platform to advertise my work, that would be reserved to other platforms like twitter, or Youtube, or my website. Instead Linkedin will be a place that I can specifically talk with others on a professional level to either set up potential projects or discuss previous projects and give more information about myself or ask questions to others about their work. It is also a site where I can follow other production corporations and businesses such as; ABC, Canon, Cloarkroom media, etc. So I can keep up to date with the events occurring throughout the industry.
Knowing how to use each platform in it's own specific way is an incredibly important skill to gain the attention of your audiences, and then also keeping that attention and building upon it.
